Abstract

Meal and oil is recovered from fish and similar raw material by disintegration, partially drying, pressing, e.g. in a screw press, and then conveying the pressed substance to a second drying apparatus which delivers a practically water-free meal. The filtrate from the press, consisting mainly of oil and water and substances dissolved and suspended therein, after straining, e.g. by passage over a vibrating screen, is fed to a centrifugal separator, provided with discharge nozzles, in which the oil is separated out and then withdrawn from the process, while a large or small part of the other centrifugally-separated components of the feed is again passed through the separator. At least part of said components may be led back to the first dryer and there mixed with the raw material fed into it, and the remainder to the second drier together with the pressed substance coming from the press. Alternatively, part of the heavier discharge from the separator may be led back to the inlet side of the vibrating-screen and/or the separator, the balance being returned to the second drier.
