Abstract
<PICT:0422530/III/1> In an apparatus consisting of a series of extractors for treating seeds and other oil-containing materials in counter current with a solvent, the first extractor consists of a chamber 4 in which is mounted a perforated feed pipe 5 through which the material passes into a second extractor 1. Seeds are fed through a hopper 7 into the pipe 5 to which solvent containing some fat is admitted through a pipe 9 from the extractor 1. The seeds saturated with solvent are compressed by a conveyer screw 6 against a spring loaded cone 14, and the concentrated extract thus obtained flows through the perforations 8 into the chamber 4 from which it is drawn off through a pipe 19 of adjustable height. The seeds pass between the cone 14 and the edge of the pipe 5 into the extractor 1 through which they are conveyed by a screw 3 against a current of solvent admitted through a pipe 21. The seeds freed from fat pass upwards through an inclined delivery pipe 15 containing a screw 16 and having a perforated area 17 surrounded by a jacket 18 through which solvent drains from the seeds and returns through a pipe 22 to the extractor. The treated seed is then removed through a pipe 20. The annular opening between the cone 14 and the pipe 5 may be regulated to prevent a direct flow of solvent from the extractor 1.
