324,681. Fairweather, H. G. C., (Prosco Oils Corporation). Aug. 1, 1928. Extracts, making.-In the continuous countercurrent extraction of fats, oils, &c. the fatty material descends by gravity through the ascending solvent, first passing through a relatively quiescent zone in which the material is freed from air and saturated with solvent, and then through an agitated zone in which extraction is effected. The descending material is stated to filter the ascending solvent. For example cocoa-cake powder or soya bean flakes are fed by rotating arms 20 through a shoot 17 in sufficient quantity to seal the opening, the shoot being extended by a flange 22 to below the level of gasoline or benzol in the jacketed extractor 5 to ensure saturation and prevent escape through the solvent outlet 23. The flakes fall through a quiescent zone BC at least 1ft. deep and then through a zone CD in which they are agitated by rotating arms 26. The extracted material accumulates in a zone DE in which it is compressed by its own weight and is removed continuously by worms 9, 13 to a dryer. The solvent is introduced through inlets 30.
