Abstract

1550. Justice, P. M., [Mills, J. E., and Battle, H. B.]. Jan. 21. Fatty oils, extracting by solvents. Oil is extracted by means of a solvent of greater specific gravity than the oilbearing material, according to a process in which the material is introduced into the extractor below the surface of the solvent so that it may rise to the surface and be removed therefrom, the solvent passing in the reverse direction. Carbon tetrachloride, tetrachlorethane, pentachlorethane, and perchlorethane are suitable for extracting cotton-seed oil by this process. The material is fed into the extractor 4 by a reciprocating plunger 3, and rises through the solvent at a rate which is regulated by rotating paddles 10. The solvent, preferably hot, is fed to the extractor by a spray pipe 26, passes down through the rising material, being cooled by a pipe 14 to prevent counter-currents, and passes away through a pivoted filter 15 and a settling-chamber 16 to a pump 17, which forces it to a still 18 in communication with a solvent-collecting tank 23. The screw 33, by which the exhausted material is removed from the extractor, acts also as a press, the liquid draining away through the perforated bottom 35, the action being aided by the admission of solvent vapour by a pipe 30. The compacted mass is broken up by a perforated septum 33<1> and revolving prongs 33". The material then falls into a drying-apparatus 38, which is provided with a steam-jacket 44, a conveyer 39 mounted on a hollow steam-heated shaft, a pipe 47 for sprinkling hot water on the material, and a pipe 47' for admitting live steam. The vapours of the solvent, being heavy, descend and are led by pipe 50 to a condenser 51. The vapours are prevented from passing away with the material by allowing the latter to become compacted at the part 61. Modifications of the screw device for removing the exhausted material are described. A separate settling and filtering chamber, or a filter-press, may be substituted for the arrangement at the base of the extractor.
