Abstract

Fats and fatty oils, extracting by solvents.-In the extraction of oils, fats &c. by liquid solvent in countercurrent the material is moved in an upwardly directed path, alternately dipped in the extracting fluid, which trickles through or over it, and pressed out, inside each separate extractor. The seeds &c. are passed from a hopper 13 through a series of inclined extractors 1, 2, 3, 4 connected by pipes 5 and containing worm conveyers 8. Solvent is fed to extractor 4 by a pipe 15 and is filtered in a chamber 10 following each extractor. The saturated solvent passes down pipe 17 to a pre-heater 52 connected with a still 53 consisting of a number of heated plates 58 in cascade form. The still-vapour passes through the pre-heater 52 and pipe 56 to a condenser 57 which also receives vapours from drying apparatus &c., and the solvent is separated from admixed water in Florentine flask separators 68, 69 from which it passes through pipe 70 to reservoir 14. The stillresidue passes to a steamer 60 provided with a sieve bottom 62 bearing a layer of filter material 64. The exhausted seeds &c., pass from extractor 4 through a pipe 20 to a preliminary drying apparatus 21 consisting of a steamjacketed vessel 22 with a stirring device 23. The material then enters a steamer 28 by a flap 26, and falls on partition 30 where it is stirred by pipe arms 40, 41, through which steam passes. A hole in partition 30 allows the material to descend to the lower region 37, from where, after further steaming, it passes through an opening 35 to a steam-jacketed drying apparatus 46 provided with stirrer 48; it leaves by vent 49. The extracting solvent may pass through a bye-pass to cut one or more extractors out of circuit.
