Abstract

612,251. Making electric contacts. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. May 21, 1946, No. 15415. Convention date, Dec. 20, 1943. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXVII and XXXIX] A switch wiper contact comprising a base metal shank 34 and a contact tip 35 made of a noble metal, the bonded surface 32 of the two metals being at a small angle to the length of the shank, as shown in Fig. 7, is made by placing bars 22, 23 of base metal on each side of a wedge-shaped bar 15 of noble metal as shown in Fig. 2. The bar 15 may alternatively be placed in a correspondingly shaped slot in a bar of base metal. The bars are welded together and then rolled out to form a composite sheet as shown at 26 in Fig. 3, in which 16 represents the upper edge of the noble metal. Wipers of the required shape are then punched out in pairs having their shanks 34 in the base metal part of the sheet and their tips in the area of noble metal, or the sheet may first be cut into two lengthwise through the middle of the strip 16 and the wipers punched out singly. The ears 39 are bent upwardly after the punching operation.
