Abstract
612,124. Splicing bone fractures. HARDINGE, M. G. March 29, 1946, No. 9822. [Class 81(ii)] A fracture reducing device includes telescoping members 6, 7, for insertion into a bone bore 5 extending into the abutting fragments 3, 4; member 6 engages member 7 by finger 32 running in slot 31, preventing rotation. A screw 10, which may be fixed against longitudinal movement by the U-shaped washer 15 on reduced diameter portion 14 inserted in transverse slot in member 6, passes through clutch 26 forcing it by enlarged head 29 into gripping engagement with inside wall of member 7; thus clutch 26 allows movement by members 6, 7 towards the contracted position but opposes movement to the extended position. Member 6 is screw-threaded at 8 to engage the bone bore, and is grooved at 9 to permit expansion under the action of wedge 12 operable by rotation of screw 10. The outer end of member 7 may be pivotally connected to a plate 20 secured to the surface of fragment 4 so that the spring 19 will constantly urge the members 6, 7 towards the contracted position; the members 6, 7 may be fully extended by manually disengaging the clutch by collar 33 on the head of screw 10. Alternatively the spring may be replaced by a short light spring-which merely urges the clutch to engage in which case pressure on the bone fragments contracts the members 6, 7.
