Abstract

285,328. Marty, L. Aug. 19, 1927. Addition to 275,598. Compensating for wear.-In order to obtain a better initial adjustment of the slack-adjusting mechanism described in the parent Specification, the teeth on the rod 4, instead of having parallel grooves, are formed as a screw thread so that the rod 4 can be rotated within the jaws 8, 9 to the initial position required. Also, the longer jaws 8, of which two are provided in diametrically opposed relation forming a cross with two jaws 9, are provided with bevelled ends 15, 16 co-operating with bevelled surfaces on the plug 7 and a washer 18 respectively, and are pressed towards the rod 4 by an axially disposed spring 19 bearing against the washer 18. In case of breakage of the spring 19, its functions are carried out by a sleeve 20, Fig. 2, which is provided with two spaced teeth 22, 23 and is capable of being displaced laterally to a small extent on a fixed pin 21 when the rod 4 is advancing a tooth relative to the jaws 8. The main actuating spring 12 is disposed externally to the sleeve 3 within a sheath 11, and an additional sheath 25 protects the outer end of the rod 4 from access of mud and dust.
