[Class 43] A buckle 1, comprising a rectangular open frame 2 on two opposing sides 3, 4 of which a gripping member 9 slides, is characterized in that one end 6 of the frame is thicker than the sides and other end 5, thus providing on the underside of the buckle an offset or projection 8 with which a flat, roughened face 10 of the gripping member co-operates. The gripping member 9 may be in one piece which is placed diagonally within the frame 2 and then slid into position, or it may be in two parts secured together by rivets 14, Fig. 3; it projects above and below the frame 2. and recesses 15, 16 in its ends loosely receive the frame sides 3, 4 to permit limited rocking movement. One strap end 17 may be permanently secured to the frame end 5, while the other end 19 is adjustably fastened by passing it upwardly through the frame, round the friction member, and down through the frame again; when the strap is placed under tension it is gripped between the friction member and frame end 6, and the offset 8 bites into it with increasng force; the strap is released by rocking upwards the frame end 6. Alternatively the frame may have projecting from its end 6 either a hook or a loop for engagement with a fitting to which one end of a strap is permanently secured. In a modification, Fig. 6, the frame has a central crossbar 53, and friction gripping members 56, 58 slide in each of the spaces so formed, offsets 57, 59 being provided at each end 52, 51 of the frame.
