Abstract
611,654. Rotary pumps or engines. HUGHES, C. May 3, 1946, No. 13446. [Class 110 (ii)] The pump (or engine) has rotary or oscillatory vanes 2, carried in the periphery of a rotor 22, an inclined Z-section shaft 8, connecting together each pair of vanes, a forked shaft 3 causing rotation of the rotor 22 about the axis of a shaft 28, and rotation of each vane about its own axis. The prongs 4, 5 of the shaft 3 have a wristpin effect on the shaft 8. Segmental, fixed abutments 27, separating inlet and outlet ports leading to the pumping chambers, or grooves, co-act with slots 11 in the vanes. A cranked Z-section shaft couples together a pair of vanes at right-angles to those shown in Fig. 1, and is driven by a shaft 9, journalled within the hollow shaft 3. Two liquid-supply rings 18 connect inlets 20 with holes 21 leading to the working chamber swept by the vanes 2. The delivery zones are connected to an annular chamber 24. Clearances are provided between the end faces of the rotor and the casing, and these may be adjusted by means of a carrier ring 25 and two screwed rings 26.
