Abstract
611,209. Microphones. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and GAYFORD, M. L. Aug. 29,1944, No. 16408. [Class 40 (iv)] In a compound microphone comprising a microphone of the velocity or pressure-gradient type and a microphone of the pressure type, the first-named microphone has two permanent magnets co-operating with polepieces having edges adjacent to the vibrating. member of the first microphone and the second-named microphone is located between the two permanent magnets of the first microphone. The ribbon 11 of the velocity microphone is located in a horizontal gap formed between parallel portions 9, 10 of V-shaped polepieces 5, 6 secured by bolts 8 to non-symmetrical U-shaped magnets 3, 4 joined at the rear by a tie-rod 7. The permanent magnets are recessed to accommodate the spherical casing of a moving-coil microphone 1 which may be as shown and described in Specification 570,337, the diaphragm 14 being located as near as possible to the ribbon 11. Polar response curves for the compound microphone in respect of frequencies up to 9000 cycles per second are indicated by the curves of Fig. 4 (not shown) and were obtained by connecting the moving-ribbon output to a step-up transformer of which the output was connected in series with the output of the moving-coil microphone.
