Abstract

610,954. Current-direction indicators. DECCA RECORD CO., Ltd., and O'BRIEN, W. J. April 15, 1946, No. 11556. [Class 37] [Also in Group XL (c)] An arrangement for ascertaining the polarity of the maximum peak of an alternating potential of asymmetric waveform comprises a pair of halfwave rectifiers which rectify separately the alternating potential and its image, a load resistance connected to each of the rectifiers, and a low-resistance centre zero galvanometer connected between the load sides of the rectifiers. The arrangement is described for use in the receiver of an aircraft flying towards a beacon of the overlapping- beam type, in which the two sides of the course-line are characterized by dots and dashes respectively. The received radio signals such as 49, Fig. 3 (corresponding to a preponderance of dots over dashes) are heterodyned at 12 and rectified at 29, 31 to produce the pulsating direct-current wave 50, Fig. 3, across load resistance 33. This wave is passed through filter 35, 38 to resistance 34 and the direct-current component of the voltage across this resistance is removed by condenser 40 so that the wave-form impressed on the primary of auto-transformer 39 is of the form shown at 51, Fig. 3, and the wave-form existing at the other end of the winding is the image of this (53, Fig. 4). These two voltages are impressed on the half-wave rectifiers 42, 43, provided with load resistances 44, 45, shunted by smoothing condensers 46, 47. The galvanometer 48 is connected across the loads as shown. That rectifier which is fed with the wave having the larger positive peak value conducts and produces a voltage as indicated at 54, .Fig. 4, across its associated load circuit and also blocks the other rectifier owing to the low resistance of the galvanometer. The galvanometer thus deflects to the right or the left in dependence upon the relative amplitudes of the dots and dashes.
