Abstract

640,675. Rectifying. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., PETER, L. H., and WALKER, A. H. B. Nov. 28, 1947, Nos. 31512/47 and 1257/48. [Class 38 (ii)] Apparatus for the supply of an extra high 'unidirectional voltage from a centre-tapped low voltage alternating supply comprises a voltage multiplier having a number of series-connected rectifiers 21-23, the connecting points of which are connected through one or more condensers 24-27 to the terminals 5, 6 of the alternating supply, the connections being made alternately first to one supply terminal and then to the other, the end 32 of the chain further from the supply being connected through an auxiliary rectifier 33 to one extra high-tension terminal 34, this terminal being connected through a condenser 35 to the centre tap of the supply and the other end 30 of the chain being connected through a second auxiliary rectifier 31 to the other extra high-tension terminal 13, this terminal being maintained at the same alternating potential as the centre tap of the supply. The transformer T may form an element in the high-tension supply in thermionic valve apparatus or the voltage multiplier may be connected directly to a low voltage. A.C. supply through a number of blocking condensers. Thus the voltages which exist between the points 30, 32 and the centre tap are rectified and added to the E.H.T. voltage generated and no A.C. component of voltage is obtained between the terminals 13, 34. Alternatively, the point 30 may be connected through the auxiliary rectifier 31 to the junction of the rectifiers 9, 10 so that the H.T. voltage also is added to the E.H.T. voltage produced. Specification 640,674 is referred to.
