Abstract

495,162. Exchange systems; valve relays. RENDALL, A. R. A. Feb. 22, 1938, No. 5632. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] An alternating-current signal receiver which discriminates against speech or the like containing the signal frequency comprises a valve the bias of which is controlled in opposite senses by potentials derived by rectification from circuits effectively in series in the output and having maximum and minimum impedance respectively at the signal frequency. The valve is normally biassed to its lower bend by a potential divider 6, 7 across the heater 2 and output signal frequency is applied over tuned transformer 14 to rectifier 21 which sets up a positive biassing charge across condenser 9 in the grid circuit. Frequencies other than the signal frequency are applied over transformer 17, having a primary circuit with a minimum impedance to signal frequency, to rectifier 25 which sets up a negative biassing charge across condenser 8. Relay 18 in the anode circuit pulls up on increase of anode current and operates 29 which completes the signal circuit. Operation of the receiver by transient currents of signal frequency is prevented by resistance 22 in the charging circuit of condenser 9, and by a condenserresistance shunt on relay 29 to make it sluggish. The output of the valve may be amplified before application to the rectifiers and the output of the rectifiers may be amplified.
