Abstract
Polyvinyl chloride compositions comprise a vinyl chloride or copolymer, a refined or unrefined hydrocarbon extract of average molar wt. 200-800 obtained by extracting a mineral oil distillate or residue with a polar solvent, or a mixture of solvents one at least being polar, and an oil-soluble lead salt of an unsaturated organic acid or of a naphthenic acid. Before use the extract may be subjected to air-blowing, sulphur treatment, chlorination, adsorption on porous solids, clay treatment, acid treatment, hydrogenation or distillation. Preferred salts are lead oleate and the lead salts of fish-oil acids. Specified plasticisers which may be present in addition to the hydrocarbon extract include tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate and dibenzyl sebacate. In an example a composition resistant to discolouration by light consists of the hydrocarbon extract, dibutyl phthalate, titanium dioxide, lead oleate and polyvinyl chloride.
