Abstract

Plasticised polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer has up to three-quarters by weight of the usual plasticiser replaced by one or more members of a class of distillation products of coal or petroleum. The distillation products consist of coal tar, coal tar pitches and the petroleum products known as "High Boiling Aromatic Distillates" (or Hibads), especially "Iranolin" (Registered Trade Mark) and "Naftolen." The high boiling distillates are prepared by treating high molar weight mineral oil fractions with selective solvents, e.g. sulphur dioxide, benzene, furfural, phenols, nitro-benzene, dichlordiethyl ether or mixtures of solvents including at least one excited. "Naftolens" are derived from acid tars resulting from the acid treatment of lubricating oils. The "usual plasticisers" listed are dibutyl, dihexyl and dioctyl phthalates, tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl sebacate and butyl acetyl recinoleate. The composition may also include stabilizers, e.g. lead stearate, carbonate or silicate, and lubricators, e.g. ethyl palmitate and paraffin wax.
