Abstract
609,483. Steering motor vehicles. MURAND, W. H. Dec. 18, 1944, Nos. 25377 and 25378. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXII] The front wheels 15 of a motor vehicle have forwardly projecting steering arms 16 which are connected by links 17 to a carriage 19 slidable along a guide disposed transversely of the chassis, the carriage being moved along its guide by a drag link 23 connected to the drop-arm of the steering box. The carriage 19 is preferably keyed or splined to its guide, and the latter may be yieldably mounted at 21 to the chassis frame, e.g. by rubber bushes. A flexible protective gaiter 20 encloses the guiderod. The wheels are independently sprung on V-shaped members 7, 8 pivoted to the frame cross-members 4, 5 at 6 and 9 and the points of attachment of the links 17 to the carriage 19 are arranged to be in line with the pivots 6, 9 when the carriage is in its mid-position. The layout permits a low engine mounting, unobstructed by the usual drag-link, and owing to the acute angle between the steering arms 61 and the links 17 gives true centre-line steering.
