Abstract

1,033,985. Steering gear for tractor vehicles. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. March 25, 1964 [April 3, 1963], No. 13146/63. Heading B7H. A steering gear for tractor vehicles comprises an arcuate lever 10 pivoted on a vertical chassis pin 9 and connected by arms 12 to levers 11 extending from stub axles which carry the road wheels 8, and an arm 15, Fig. 2 (not shown), pivoted horizontally and coupled to the steering wheel 13 of the vehicle by way of a steering box 16 and column 14, the lever 10 being pivotally connected directly, and the arm 15 by a link 20, to a cylinder 19 slidable on a piston-rod 21 pivoted to the vehicle chassis at 22. The piston-cylinder combination may comprise an hydraulic shock absorber, or the cylinder may be provided with fluid control valves and be supplied with fluid from an hydraulic pump on the vehicle to provide power-assisted steering. The steering box 16 is supported by a member 17 carried on members 18 upstanding from chassis side members 1. An axle 4 carrying the stub axles and road wheels is mounted to the front chassis member 2 substantially as described and as claimed in Specification 1,006,634.
