Abstract

1,091,392. Vehicles for negotiating obstacles. CHASESIDE ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Sept. 27, 1965 [Sept. 30, 1964], No. 39755/64. Heading B7H. A six-wheeled vehicle for negotating obstacles includes hydraulically operable means for adjusting the position of one pair of wheels about a transverse axis and for varying the position of the centre of gravity of the vehicle. Rear wheels 9 are mounted on levers 15 adjustable about a transverse pivot 13 by hydraulic rams 18, and a load platform 6 supported by links 16 pivotally connected to the levers 15 and to trunnions 17 beneath the platform is displace - able longitudinally of the vehicle by hydraulic rams 22. Hydraulic accumulators may be connected to the rams 18 to damp movements of the rear wheels 9. Extension of the rams 22 beyond the range of movement permitted by the links 16 tips the platform 6, warning lights in the driving cab 5 indicating when this limit is reached and a hydraulic cut-out necessitating actuation of a separate control before tipping commences. All six wheels are driven from an engine 10, and the vehicle is steered by steering the front and rear wheels 7, 9 and/or by differential braking. In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown) the trunnions beneath the load platform 6 are connected directly to the lever 15.
