Abstract
608,568. Screw conveyers. NICHOLSON, A. W., and PATIN ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. March 25, 1946, No. 9212. [Class 78 (i)] A conveyer comprises an open wound helical resilient member or spring 1 of constant or variable pitch, a load carrier 4 having a part loosely engaging a turn of the spring, means for rotating the spring and means such as a tube 2 formed with a slot 3 for the passage of the carrier to constrain it to move along the spring 1. The tube is supported from joists 8 by T brackets 6 with a horizontal tube 7 having a bottom slot. For use close to the ground, the tube 2 is supported between two members 9, 10, Fig. 4, shaped to fit the tube and connected to upright brackets 13, 14, which are secured to the floor. To prevent back play, a gravity pawl passes through a slot in the upper surface of the tube 2 and engages between the turns of the spring. The pawl is mounted between brackets secured to the tube. Alternatively, a ratchet-wheel may be used which passes through a slot in the tube and has a tooth always disposed between two adjacent turns. The spring is fitted to a shaft at one end and is rotated by a worm and worm-wheel which is rigidly mounted on and turns the shaft. The shaft can alternately be rotated by a chain-and-sprocket wheel or by a belt on a pulley mounted on or keyed to a shaft. The supporting tube may be internally padded or lubricated.
