Abstract

Asphaltic bitumen compositions are prepared by grinding together asphaltic bitumens, preferably in lump form, with melting points above about 100 DEG C. (Ring & Ball) and penetrations at 25 DEG C. lower than about 25 and more than 50 per cent by weight (on total mixture) of mineral fillers to a powder preferably having a size of grain less than 1 mm. Artificial bitumens from mineral oil or natural asphaltic bitumens or asphaltic bitumens of the blown type may be used. Suitable fillers are quartz powder, limestone powder, shale powder, flue-ash, rock dust, ground microasbestos, asbestos powder, ground mica and talcum powder. The composition may be used for coating iron pipes (see Group XXVIII) or mixed with solvents, e.g. benzene, to form a spreadable mass suitable for painting a heat resisting or acid proof layer for tanks.
