Abstract
607,780. Thermal switches. THOMPSON & CO. (SUNBURY), Ltd., R. E., and BENFORD, P. R. Sept. 25, 1946, No. 24815/45. [Class 38 (v)] Sparking at contacts carried by the spring arms of a thermostatically-operated switch is reduced by loading one of the arms with a weight to reduce the natural frequency of vibration of the arm. Fig. 1 shows a switch actuated by a bimetallic strip 7 and having contacts 1, 2 carried by spring arms 3, 4. A weight 20 is attached to the free end of the arm 3. The arms 3, 4 are mounted between insulating laminations of a block 5 which is clamped between a bracket 6 and the strip 7. A bolt 10 is provided to fix the switch to an iron. The position of the fixed contact 2 can be adjusted by a hollow spindle 12 which screws in an opening in the bracket 6 and which can be rotated by a detachable knob (not shown). The spindle 12 is fitted with a screw 13 carrying an insulator 15a which abuts against the arm 4. The screw 13 can be adjusted in the spindle 12 through the hollow end of the latter and can be fixed in position by a grub-screw 15. Rotation of the spindle 12 is limited by an arm fixed to the spindle and a stop 17 fixed to the bracket 6.
