[Class 138((ii)] The detachable top bar 5 of a wring- ing machine carries the spring 6 for applying pressure to the upper roller 2 and is hooked or otherwise detachably secured at one end 10 to one side shoe 4, the other end being provided with a pivoted side member 12 having an abutment or projection 13 adapted to engage and traverse a pivoted locking cam 14 until a position is reached in which the abutment or projection passes the vertical or dead centre of the pivot 14* of the cam. In this position, spring loading is applied to the top roller. In order to release this pressure, it is necessary to depress towards the rollers either of two bars 7 which are pivoted on opposite sides of the top bar 5 and have depending aprons 9. This movement of the bar 7, which occurs against the action of springs 8, causes fingers 16 on the bar to depress projections 15 on the cam 14, whereby the latter turns on its pivot until the abutment 13 is freed and the member 12 and top bar 5 fly upward under the action of the spring 6. The upward movement of the bar 5 at this time is limited either by a shackle 19 which is secured to each end bearing 20 of the upper roller 2 and normally passes loosely over each end of the spring 6, or by abutments 18 on the member 12 engaging ridges 17 on the cam 14; in the latter case, a gap 17x is provided in the ridges 17 to permit the member 12 to be completely detached from the cam.
