[Classes 122 (i) and 122 (iii)] In a triple or quadruple expansion steam engine using high pressure, highly superheated steam, the H.P. cylinder C is surrounded by a jacket K supplied through a connection L with the exhaust of one of the I.P. cylinders so that the cylinder wall swept by the piston rings is cooled. Corrugations in the jacket allow dimensional variations. In the case where the H.P. cylinder and an I.P. cylinder are in tandem, the jacket may surround both cylinders and in the case of a single-acting piston, the steam passing through the jacket may have access to the cylinder below the piston. Conveniently, the H.P. cylinder is arranged between the LP. cylinders or between an I.P. cylinder and an L.P. cylinder.
