Abstract

Refractory materials which come in contact with molten iron, e.g. such as are used for making moulds, cores, or parting powders, or bricks or ramming masses for use in reheating or annealing furnaces, consist of magnesium silicate wherein the atomic ratio of magnesium to silicon varies between 1.7:1 and 1.1:1. A natural or synthetic magnesium silicate may be used, preferably a coarsely crystalline, substantially anhydrous mineral such as enstatite, clinoenstatite, anthophyllite, or other magnesium amphibole, or mixtures thereof or with olivine or forsterite. The material is crushed to pass a British Standard sieve No. 60, the finest dust is removed, and the residue is mixed with a binder such as bentonite, magnesium hydroxide, linseed oil or cellulose liquor. A paint of magnesium silicate can be applied to the face of the mould or cone. Carbonaceous materials can be incorporated. Specifications 441,516, 474,038, 518,440 and 587,870 are referred to.
