Abstract

A basic or neutral refractory composition, mortar, or ramming mix comprises iron silicate and magnesia which on firing unite to form a ceramic bond of magnesioferrite and forsterite. The iron silicate may be formed by fusion of a silica and iron oxide, or the natural silicates may be used provided they are free from such impurities as alumina, lime, and boron oxide. Sufficient magnesia is added to effect the chemical change. The iron silicate and magnesia are finely ground and intimately mixed, and are then mixed with the refractory grains, a small amount of water and, if desired, a temporary binding-agent.
