Abstract

607,016. Road signs. PINCHIN, H. W. March 18, 1946, No. 8324. [Class 3(ii)] [Also in Group X] A street bollard is mounted on a ball and socket or other universal joint at its base and is retained in or returned to upright position by a counterweight. As shown, a bollard 10 is screwed to a ball 14 and contains a plug 15 to which a counterweight 29 is attached by a universal joint 23, 26 and flexible connection 28. To damp the movement of the bollard, the counterweight is formed as a piston and moves in a cylinder 30 containing liquid. The piston is provided with two ports 31, 32 of unequal size, the larger of which 31 has a valve 33 at its lower end, the arrangement being such that the damping action will be greater as the weight moves downward than as it moves upward. A rapid return of the bollard to its vertical position will thus be avoided. The bollard carries a flexible covering 21 for the ball 14, and at its free end mounts a reflector 12 and head 11, the wall of which has cut-out stencil letters, the interior being reflective. Light from a lamp unit 37 mounted on a socket plate 17 is directed into the head to illuminate the stencil.
