Abstract

A flexible traffic light system has the post articulated by a sphere mounted in a base such that it can pivot. The post is screw threaded to the sphere by a male or a female connection.

Description

Flexible Traffic sight System This invention is related to a traffic light system, which is considered a vital tool in arranging the traffic in the whole world. The standard traffic light system consists mainly of three parts.
Firstly, the light box containing the equipment and the electrical connections required for providing signals in the form of the three known colours. The second part is the mechanical support in the form of steel tube or beam. The third part is the fixed basement required to keep the whole system mechanically stable.
The traffic light system is frequently exposed to damage during various accidents caused by all types of vehicles. Most of these damages are not repairable and require the replacement of the whole unit. Therefore, it is expected that the losses due to these damages will be increased with the time since the number of the cars increasing dramatically every year.
The present idea of invention provides a flexible traffic light system comprising a locally movable steel sphere, internally teethed, and connected with steel bar which can be screwed into this sphere supporting the conventional light box as shown in Figures 3-5. This arrangement allows the sphere positioned in the basement to move freely if the traffic light system have been subjected to strong force. Another alternative design is also provided using a spring instead of the steel bar as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
In most cases of accidents, the traffic lights unit is damaged when the steel bar is pushed by the vehicle which causes downing the whole unit. According to the proposed idea of invention this bar is no more suffers from this damage since it can be swing around its original position.
In worst cases if the system has experienced some deformation or damage it is easy and cheap to replace it.

Claims (7)

1 A flexible traffic light system comprising a signalling unit in the form of a box supported by a metallic post, the post being screwed into a solid steel sphere embedded in a square concrete base, the sphere being positioned to produce a free swinging motion of the post with an angle of +/ 45 from its original vertical position.
2 A flexible traffic light system as claimed in claim 1 where the lower end of the supporting post is screwed into a solid steel sphere in a male to female coupling.
3 A flexible traffic light system as claimed in claim 1 or Claim 2, where the signalling box is fixed to the top of the post, by a set of stmng screws.
4 A flexible traffic lights system as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3, where the square concrete base is provided with a steel cover including a suitable circular hole for facilitating the free swinging movement of the post
5 A flexible traffic lights system as claimed in Claim 4, where the base cover is fixed to the base by a set of strong screws.
6 A flexible traffic lights system as claimed in Claim 5, where a set of flexible rubber seals are provided to protect the gap between edges of the circular hole in the base cover and the post and preventing the ingress of haS materials into the space between the sphere and the adjacent concrete wall.
7 A flexible traffic lights system substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-3 in the accompanying drawings.
