[Class 100(ii)] Shelf edgings or coverings and other ornaments are formed of a transparent plastic ply 7 interposed between a transparent plastic ply 9 and a backing ply 1, the plies 1, 9 being printed by couples P, p<1>, p<2>, P<3> respectively on the sides which contact with the ply 7. The ply 7 is extruded on to the printed ply 1 as this passes over a conveyer 2, and the ply 9 passes over a roll 10 to bring it into contact with the ply 7. After passing over a table 3, which may be heated, the compound material is passed between embossing or indenting rollers 11, 4, which produce an embossed design in relief on the upper side of the compound material, and in intaglio on the lower side, the embossed designs being in register with the printed designs, and the two designs are correllated so as to produce a composite pattern such as the flowers and leaves &c. of a plant. If desired both embossed designs may be in intaglio. The plastic materials may be of thermoplastic or thermosetting nature, and if of the latter in addition to employing heated embossing rollers heating means are added beyond the embossing rollers to facilitate quick setting. The ply 7 may be formed of transparent synthetic resins such as cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, acrylic resins, stearine resins, vinyl resins, urea or phenolic resins. Cellulosic materials may be used for the facing or backing ply. The invention may be carried out by flat plate printing operations, and the printed impressions may be on the ply 7 instead of on the plies 1, 9.
