Abstract

Ferrous materials are heated in a furnace by a two-stage direct combustion of gaseous fuel, firstly by partial combustion of the gas in the charge-containing chamber and secondly by completing combustion in a heat exchanger used to preheat the gas or the air or both, the partially burnt gases being preferably passed direct to the heat exchanger without substantial loss of their sensible heat. Where the calorific value of the gas lies between 380-600 B.T.U. the ratio of air to gas used lies between 2.0 and 2.8 to 1.0 by volume, whereas if the calorific value is from 1,000-1,150 B.T.U. the ratio is 4.7-6.8 to 1.0.
