Abstract

A fuel for compression ignition engines comprises a hydrocarbon oil containing preferably a minor amount, e.g. 1 per cent of an N-alkyl substituted N-nitro alkyl carbamate, having the formula <FORM:0606212/III/1> wherein R and R1 are alkyl radicals which may be identical or different. The addition of this compound is said to raise the cetane number of fuels without substantial lowering of the flash-point of the fuel and with some lowering of the pour-point. The addition of 1 per cent of N-nitro N-butyl ethyl carbamate (also called N-nitro N-butyl urethane) to a typical fuel for high-speed diesel engines raised the cetane number from 39 to 50 and lowered the pour-point from -12 DEG F. to -16 DEG F. while leaving the flash-point unchanged. N-nitro N-isopropyl urethane, N-nitro N-ethyl urethane, N-nitro N-methyl urethane and N-nitro N-butyl butyl carbamate are also mentioned as alternative addition agents of the above type.
