[Class 82(ii)] A machine for making metal grains, shot, &c., has a manually adjustable valve 2 and an automatic stop valve 9 between the melting pot 1 and a ladle 5 which has means to distribute the molten metal evenly over the bottom of one or more sieves 12. The valve 2 is adjusted to deliver faster than the sieves discharge so that the ladle tends to fill but it is carried by a vertically movable and counterbalanced support 6 so that, when full enough, it moves down and a trip 28 operates a switch 29, in circuit with a solenoid 8, to close the valve 9. When the level of metal in the ladle falls this rises again and reverses the switch 29 and opens the valve 9. Instead of an electric a pneumatic, hydraulic, &c. control may be used. The ladle has a calibrated nozzle 10 for each sieve 12 to keep a constant depth of metal therein. The sieves are rotated, at a speed sufficient to prevent the formation of double grains, by a motor 14, reducing gearing in a box 20 and a carrier 15. Each nozzle 10 delivers to a pivoted shoot 11 which may have heating means b, Fig. 3, and which is oscillated, to distribute the metal over the bottom of the sieve, by a cam thereon engaging a roller 30 connected to said shoot by a crank 30a &c. A spring hammer 22, pivoted at 24, is associated with each carrier 15 and is raised by projections 39 thereon to strike the sieve it carries thus preventing the holes in it from becoming clogged. The molten metal in the pot and ladle may be covered with charcoal to prevent oxidation.
