Abstract

605,667. Making piston rings. BRITISH PISTON RING CO., Ltd., and TWIGGER, T. R. Jan. 3, 1946, No. 213. [Class 83 (ii)] In the manufacture of plated piston rings, the rings are plated before being split, and while they have an uninterrupted peripheral surface after which they are formed to the required shape by mechanical means, for example by hammering or rolling, or by heat forming, preferably carried out at between 400-550‹ C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The unsplit rings are plated as they come from the finish turning or finish grinding operation and after plating may be given a further finishing as by honing or lapping. If desired, the rings may also be plated on their side faces, such side face plating being carried out by a separate operation at a suitable stage in the manufacture of the rings.
