Abstract
605,614. Handlebars for bicycles. AUDRAIN, P. Jan. 1, 1946, No. 13. Convention date, Sept. 21, 1940. [Class 136 (iii)] A jointed bracket for handle bars of bicycles and other vehicles comprises essentially a stationary part 2 comprising two cheeks integral with the fork and a second jointed movable part 4 supporting the handlebar 8, the movable part being adjustable to maintain or alter the orientation of the handlebars. The handlebar 8 is secured by a pin 7 to sleeve 6 which can turn in the movable part 4 and is clamped in position by nut 9. The part 4 can turn on a spindle 3 passing through the cheeks 2 and is held in position by a nut 5. To hold the handlebar in position a link 15 is connected to lugs 11 and 13 by pins 12 and 14. An abutment 16 moving in slot 17 limits the movement of part 4. The position of the handlebar can be adjusted by loosening one or both nuts 5 and 9 and tightening again when in the required position. In a modification a lever movement is used to change the position of the handlebar. The lever releases two locks from notches in two discs connected by an endless cable enclosed in a casing in which the handlebar is fixed. The handlebar can then be moved to the required position when the lever is released, the locks re-engage the discs and the handlebar is locked in position.
