605,346. Air heaters. BIGWOOD & SON, Ltd., J., and TINLEY, E. L. Nov. 28, 1945, No. 32076. [Class 64(iii)] An air heater comprises two or more packs of plates, each pack comprising an assembly of channel shaped plates clamped ' together tc form passages from side to side for air and passages from bottom to top for heating gases, each plate forming three sides of a passage, the fourth side of which is formed by the adjacent plates, and casings provided at opposite edges or sides of the whole assembly for the purpose of placing the ends of the air passages in communication with those of the next above, so that the air can pass back and forth through the air passages of adjacent superposed packs of plates. The plates 17 with flanges 18 and bosses 20 are assembled in packs held together by bolts 21 and kept in alignment by plates 24. Hot gases from furnace 10 flow up the passages 25 to smoke box 26. Air is forced through the horizontal passages by a fan. Square, rectangular, or lozenge shaped plates may be used, and they may be inclined alternately in adjacent packs to form zig-zag gas passages.
