[Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In expanders for the shoes of drum brakes comprising an elongated floating cam, which is slidable in a slot in a rotatable actuating shaft, the sides of the cam bear against anti-friction rollers mounted in the shaft. In one form, Figs. 2 and 3, a pair of shoes are applied by or anchor on plungers 24 slidable in bores 22 in a casing 16 bolted to a fixed part of the brake. The ends of the plungers are engaged by the curved end surfaces 42, 44, preferably formed as involutes, of a cam 40 which is slidable on rollers 46, 48, in an inclined slot 38 formed in an enlarged portion of the actuating shaft 28. The rollers have reduced end portions 50 journalled in bores 51 in the shaft and in bushes 52 which are pressed in after the rollers have been inserted. The shaft 28 is provided with needle bearings 34 and a spigot bearing 32, and is formed with splines 36 to receive a lever arm operated by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder or by mechanical linkage. The casing is filled with lubricant and provided with a breather 62 of porous material, Fig. 1 (not shown). In a modification, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the cam surfaces engage rollers mounted on the plungers, and the end portions of the rollers 46, 48 are mounted in needle bearings.
