Abstract

A composition, elastic under sharply applied stress and plastic under slowly applied stress, is prepared by heating a dimethyl silicone oil with boric acid, pyroboric acid, boric anhydride, or an alkyl borate in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, titanium dioxide, or ferric chloride as catalyst. Fillers, e.g. lithopone, ferric oxide or silica may be added; elasticity may be increased by the addition of glycerine, soapy water, zinc hydroxide or bentonite; and plasticity may be increased by addition of oleic acid, glyceryl oleate or other fat or grease. The products may be used as putty, golf ball centres, filling compounds and high temperature seals for vacuum joints, type-cleansing material, and acoustic and therapeutic (exercising) purposes. In examples: (1) dimethyl silicone oil, pyroboric acid and alcohol are heated, then milled with lithopone and benzoyl peroxide, then finally heated with more silicone oil and benzoyl peroxide; (2) dimethyl silicone oil, ethyl borate, and ferric chloride hexahydrate are heated by steam introduced to hydrolyse the ester, then milled with titanium dioxide; (3) dimethyl silicone oil is heated with pyroboric acid and ferric chloride hexahydrate.
