Abstract

604,829. Batteries. AMERICAN HARD RUBBER CO. Dec. 5, 1945, No. 32870. Convention date, June 5. [Class 53] A pencil - type electrode is provided with a retaining sheath consisting of a helicallywound thread of non-conducting material, the end portions of which are in contact with the outer surfaces of enlargements on the central metal rod of the pencil. Fig. 1 shows an electrode pencil comprising a lead rod 10, having enlargements 17, 18 near its ends, flanges 11 to retain the active material 14 in place, and members 12, 13 for attachment of the pencil to upper and lower connecting bars. The active material may be moulded round the rod 10 or filled in after the outer sheath 19 has been placed partly in position. The sheath 19 is a helix the turns of which are spaced apart to allow access of electrolyte to the active material, the end turns 15, 16 being either closely coiled to engage the enlargements 17, 18 on the rod 10, or wound uniformly with the rest of the helix and surrounded by bands or collars 21 as shown in Fig. 2. The helix may be made from a thermoplastic material or from a partially or completely vulcanized rubber composition and it may be wound directly on the active material when this is moulded on the rod 10 or it may be wound on a mandrel and then placed in position over the rod 10. Styrene and polyethylene may be used and also glass fibre threads. In order to maintain the spacing between the turns of the helix, ribs 20 may be attached by heat and pressure.
