Abstract
604,333. Metal-working presses. HERCULES ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., Inc. Nov. 19, 1945, No. 31038. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1944. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIII] A metal-working machine having a frame and co-operating fixed and movable dies, is provided with an elongated gauge bar to position the work, the gauge bar being adjustably clamped to the frame and electromagnetic means associated with the gauge bar to hold metal against the bar during the operation of the machine. Angular bending.-In one example the movable die 3, Fig. 1, of a bending-machine is reciprocated against a stationary die or former 2 by a drive mechanism 4 operated through a clutch 5 controlled by a foot pedal 7 through link rod 6. A gauge bar 8 adjustably secured by clamps 8a positions the work 11 and is magnetized by solenoids 9 which are vertically adjustable on pillars 10. The magnetizing current is controlled by a limit switch 37 having a crank 37a connected to the link mechanism 6a so that magnetizing current is supplied when the head 3 is at the top of its stroke and until the head has made its down-stroke thereafter the switch operates to cut off the current as the head returns so that the work may be removed. The solenoids are connected in parallel across a D.C. supply which may be drawn from an A.C. source transformed and rectified and the current is controlled by a rheostat. A manually-operated switch is provided to disconnect the solenoid during non- working or in the case of emergency and the limit switch is operative in a separate circuit to supply holding current to a contactor according to the position of the head. Shearing; punching.-In. another example, a shearing machine, Fig. 3, has solenoids associated with a gauge bar 14 adjustably supported by C clamps 14a on angle brackets 15a and the cutter head 16 moves down between the angle supports to sever the work 12. Additional holding members 17 contact the work ahead of the shear blade. In a punching machine, the operation is substantially the same as described with reference to Fig. 1, but the gauge bar may be adjustable on a block on the machine frame and clamped by screws. The solenoids may be incorporated in the framework of a machine.
