Abstract

604,264. Gripper mechanism. HARRISSEYBOLD CO. Feb. 26, 1948, Nos. 5760 and 5761. Convention dates, Sept. 4, 1941, and March 12, 1942. [Classes 100(i) and 100(ii)] A sheet gripper mechanism for feeding sheets to or from printing machines, or for carrying the sheets around impression cylinders is constructed with a series of grippers 32 which are independently freely mounted on a gripper shaft 29 carried in bearings secured to a transverse bar 13 a number of which are attached to conveyer chains 10 which in the form shown carry the mechanism to an impression cylinder, or to a number of cylinders in succession. The links 14, 15 of the chains -are connected by three rollers 16 moving over upper and lower guide tracks, and, as shown, over a roller 52'formed with a gap to receive the bars 13 and associated grippers. The grippers are normally pressed clockwise so as to cause the sheets to be gripped against, pads 40 by means of independent springs 36 contained in casings 33 which bear upon rail portions 39 of the bars 13 as shown in Fig. 5. The spring pressure is transmitted to the gripper mountings by a concave bearing surface 37 on a plunger rod 36 engaging a convex bearer 38 connected to the mounting, and the shaft 29 is moved clockwise by the combined action of the springs when permitted by cam 50, Fig. 2. Each casing 33 is pivoted at 34 to a dog 30. When a roller 49 secured to an arm 47 on the gripper shaft engages. the cam 50 the shaft 29 is moved counterclockwise, and each gripper mounting is also moved counterclockwise by means of the dog 30 which is secured by a screw 31 to the shaft 29. This movement of the gripper mounting compresses the springs 36 still further but the leverage at which the springs act diminishes so that this compensates for the increased spring pressure. The grippers can be adjusted axially of the shaft 29, and the movement of the shaft 29 in the closing direction is limited by an adjustable screw engaging a fixed abutment.
