Abstract
604,192. Electric battery lamps. OLDHAM & SON, Ltd., and ROBERTS, A. O. Sept. 25, 1944, No. 18307. [Class 39(ii)] [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVI] A miners' accumulator lamp which is provided with a pair of exposed charging terminals whereby the accumulator may be charged while in its casing, has one charging terminal connected permanently to one pole of the accumulator, the other charging terminal being normally dead until an enclosed magnetic switch is operated to connect it to the other pole of the accumulator, the normal inoperative position of the magnetic switch being such that it connects the said other pole of the accumulator to the bulb circuit of the lamp. A charging board for use with the lamp is provided with a pair of contacts connected to a current supply system and arranged to engage the charging terminals when the lamp is placed on the board, a magnet or electro-magnet being disposed on the board so that it operates the magnetic switch of the lamp, the circuit of the electromagnet preferably being provided with a switch which is closed by the pressure of the lamp bearing against it. Fig. 2 shows in inverted plan the relevant features of a handlamp, the accumulator 7 and bulb 1 being indicated diagrammatically. The charging terminals 8, 9 are located one on each side of a compartment 3 disposed above the accumulator housing, the terminal 8 being connected directly to one pole of the accumulator the other pole of which is connected to a terminal 10 and through a flexible lead 11 to the armature 12 of the magnetic switch. The armature is biassed by a spring 14 which normally holds the armature contact 15 against a contact 16 connected to the centre contact 19 of the bulb socket, so that the lamp circuit is completed when a press-button switch 22 is operated. Operation of the armature by an adjacent magnet breaks the lamp circuit and brings armature contact 15 against a contact 17 on a bracket connected to the charging terminal 9, thus making the circuit between the charging terminals 8, 9 through the accumulator 7. When applied to a cap lamp with a flexible lead connecting the lamp to the battery, the magnetic switch may be located in either the bulb casing or battery casing. A charging board is shown in Fig. 3, (see Groups XXXV and XXXVI).
