Abstract
603,566. Dash pots. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BAKER, W. F. July 22,1942, No. 10269. [Class 108 (iii)] In a dashpot comprising a sealed gas-containing chamber, Fig. 1, divided by a diaphragm 3 into two compartments 6, 7, each of which contains part of a bellows arrangement 1, 2 in its walls and in which the diaphragm has an aperture 8 to permit a restricted flow of gas from one compartment to the other, the volume of one or both of the compartments is reduced by dishing an end wall or walls 4, 5. The walls 4, 5 are fixed and the diaphragm is connected by a rigid link 9 with a movable member such as the armature of an electrical contactor. Movement of the diaphragm is controlled by flow of gas between the compartments 6, 7 through the diaphragm aperture 8. The aperture 8 may be made variable in size by fitting jets 22, Fig. 4, of different sizes, on unscrewing a plug 23 in a sleeve 24 in the plate 5. Alternatively, an adjustable needle valve may control flow of fluid through the aperture, or the resistance to movement of the diaphragm may be made unidirectional by fitting a ball or flap valve therein, or by fitting two such valves unequal resistances in the two directions of movement may be obtained.
