603,246. Automatic bobbin changing in looms. BARRERA, J. M. Aug. 20, 1945, No. 21230. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1944. [Class 142(iii)] When weft replenishment is initiated, a spool is deposited on top of the shuttle whilst the slay is at rear centre and is gradually pressed into the shuttle (by a hammer pivoted on the slay) as the slay moves forward. During normal weaving, a pin 27 on the slay passes ineffectively through a hole 26<SP>11</SP> in a lever 23, but when a feeler at the other end of the loom detects substantial weft exhaustion, a member 26 is swung to mask the hole. On the forward stroke of the slay, a shaft 20 is turned by the'levers 23, 29, 31 to the position shown, where it is retained by the lever 29 snapping into a notch 32; the movement of the shaft brings a rod 38 into the path of a lug 60 on a transfer hammer 53. so that on the ensuing rearward stroke of the slay the rod rocks the feeder 55 of a magazine 14, whereupon a spool 15 drops on to the shuttle. Meanwhile, a member 42 (loose on the shaft 20) which, during the rearward stroke of the slay was held down against a spring 43 by the lug 60, rises to the position shown; on the succeeding forward stroke of the slay, the lug 60 encounters a roller 41 whereby the hammer 53 is turned to press the spool 15 into the shuttle, the empty spool being ejected through the bottom of the shuttle box. As the slay nears front centre, the lug 60 rides under the roller 41 and, in doing so, lifts the member 42, thereby turning the shaft 20 slightly and releasing the notch 32 from the lever 29, whereupon the shaft resumes its normal position under the influence of a spring 34. Positioning shuttle: As the slay moves forwardly on the transfer stroke, the upper end of a lever 68 rides against the divergent edge of a plate 35 fixed on the shaft 20, so that its lower end pushes the shuttle 61 fully into the shuttle box.
