Abstract

602,795. Aircraft landing gear. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. May 10, 1943, No. 7375. Convention date, March 23, 1942. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXXII] An aircraft undercarriage, incorporating pneumatic shockabsorbing struts (see Group XXXII), as shown in Fig.2, comprises wheel-carrying, tubular shock struts 11, 12, provided with air-spring bellows 17, 18 and connected by a bar 19 fixed to fuselage frame elements 21, the struts being enclosed by stream-lined housings 20. Each strut consists of elliptical-section tubes 24, 25, Fig. 3, having flanges 71, 69, respectively, to which the lower and upper ends of the bellows are clamped. Shocks causing relative movement of the tubes 24, 25 are absorbed by frictional engagement of the tubes and compression of air therebetween. Elongation of each strut is limited by scissors-links connecting the tubes.
