Abstract
602,601. Pressure - regulating valves. GLENNY, A. P., and SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd. June 4, 1945, No. 13938. [Class 135] A fluid pressure regulator has throttling means rigidly connected to means responsive to the pressure to be regulated and loaded by resilient means, e.g. a spring, one end of which engages an adjustable stop and the other end of which is connected by a linkage device to the throttling means such that any deflection of the resilient means is less than the corresponding deflection of the throttling means, whereby variations in the regulated pressure with different degrees of throttling are minimized. The regulator, which, as shown, is adapted for use in a negative pressure system, has a cylindrical throttling member 6 coacting with a fixed plug' 7 and controlling a duct 4 connected at 4b to the system and at 4a to a suction pump. A spring 18, engaging at one end with an adjustable abutment 20, bears at its other end against a slidable member 16 coacting with a push rod 19 engaging an arm 13c of a bell-crank lever 13 pivoted on a knife-edge bearing 13b. The other arm 13a of the bell-crank is connected to the throttling means by a cable 12 whereby the throttling means is urged upwardly by the spring 18. A diaphragm 5, fixed to the throttling means, is subjected, through a passage 11, to the pressure in the system, the action of the diaphragm, therefore, opposing that of the spring 18. Since the arm 13c of the bell-crank is made shorter than the arm 13a, a deflection of the spring 18 is less than the corresponding deflection of the throttling means.
