Abstract

602,401. Making hollow-ware. DRUMS, Ltd., and JESSOP, W. Oct. 15, 1945, No. 26900. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XVI] Stamping saw-threads.-A method of forming a screw-threaded opening in a sheet of metal or other material for accommodating a screwthreaded closure comprises perforating the sheet so as to form an opening surrounded by a flange and then subjecting the flange to a pressing operation between fixed and radially movable die parts. The inner. die comprises an externally screw-threaded cylinder 1 non- rotatably mounted on a spigot 4 bolted to a plate 8. The outer die comprises four radial sections 9 screw-threaded at their inner ends and movable inwardly on the plate 8 against the action of springs 12 by means of the inner coned surface of a surrounding ring 14. In operation, an article of sheet metal or other material is supported as shown, with a flange 28, to be threaded depending between the dies. The work and the dies are pressed down by a press head 22 against the action of a resilient pad 19, the die sections 9 being thereby contracted until the flange 28 is firmly pressed between the inner and outer dies and the screwthread is thus formed.
