Abstract

602,034. Propelling boats. ENGLAND, G., and ENGLAND, R. K. Oct. 28, 1946, No. 21198/45. [Class 114] [Also in Group XV] In reaction propulsion mechanism for waterborne vessels in which successive charges of water are expelled rearwardly through tubes 51 having open ends beneath the surface of the water, by the expansion of air or steam in a heated chamber 53, tubes 50 extend forwardly of the vessel to admit the successive charges of water. Clack valves in the tubes 50 prevent discharge of water therethrough and reversing may be effected by a single clack valve at the junction of the forward and rearward tubes 50, 51 selectively controlling either tube by movement of an external handle 56. An escape tube 55 to the atmosphere affords a '' stop " position. The heated chamber may comprise a coiled tube over which an insulating baffle extends. Where more than one chamber is required the coiiled tubes are grouped together to be heated by a single burner. In the toy vessel, Fig. 4, the coiled heat chamber 10 is insulated by'a partition 17, 61 and a depression or trap 64 is provided on each rear tube which is heat insulated where it passes through the stern of the vessel by a grummet 7. As shown the burner 12, fuel container 13 and filling pipe 30 therefor are removable through an aperture in the afterdeck but the propulsion unit as a whole may be contained in a separate housing integral with the stern of the vessel and be slidable into the hull.
