Abstract
622,963. Propelling ships. FREEMAN, C. T., and ASTRA-PHAROS. Ltd. Dec. 31, 1946, No. 38173. [Class 114] Water-borne craft or boats are propelled by a unit having a heated closed pressure chamber communicating with one or more outlet tubes each directly connected, without the interposition of a mixing chamber, to rearwardlydirected jet ducting of larger internal crosssection than the outlet tube or tubes. The pressure chamber is a helical coil of tubing 1, the upper end 2 being closed and the lower end formed as an outlet tube and bent downwardly at 3 to enter the upwardly directed end 4 of a jet pipe of larger diameter. The connection between the two pipes is closed. The jet pipe passes through the hull, projects rearwardly, and has its end 7 inclined upwardly, but remains below the water-line 10. If desired, the mouth 8 may be flattened to fish-tail form. The coil is heated by a lamp or burner 9. The slot orifice may be vertically disposed instead of horizontally. The unit may be employed as an outboard motor and may be pivotally mounted for steering.
