Abstract
Crude metal phytates derived from plant sources such as cereals, soya bean, cotton seed, sugar beet and sugar cane are purified by removal of proteinaceous impurities therefrom by treating the phytates with an aqueous solution of strongly alkaline agents to dissolve or colloidally disperse the impurities. The metal phytate may be calcium, barium or magnesium phytate and the alkaline agent sodium or potassium hydroxide or carbonate or trimethylbenzyl ammonium hydroxide or mixtures thereof. After the treatment with alkali, the phytate may be neutralized with an acidic substance such as hydrochloric or acetic acid before being washed with water. In examples, crude calcium phytate, derived from corn steep water is treated with aqueous sodium hydroxide of various concentrations at elevated temperatures. The purified phytate, after washing, in some cases with dilute hydrochloric acid is separated by filtration.
