Abstract
An organic gelling-compound is extracted from vegetable matter by soaking it in water to remove sugar, glucosides or other soluble material, and then boiling in a solution which has been rendered alkaline by the addition of a substance which hydrolyses to form an alkaline solution. The vegetable material, preferably in the green state, is soaked for approximately two hours in water at a temperature of about 120 DEG F., the material having been previously crushed or macerated if necessary to break down the hard covering. The material is then washed free from the soaking-liquor and is boiled for about half an hour in a .75-1 per cent solution of sodium carbonate; for each 100 grams of material, a solution of 7 grams of washing soda in 2000 c.c. of water may be used. The resulting liquor, after removal of solid matter, may be used as a colloid or may be filtered and concentrated by precipitation as by the addition of a salt solution, alkali or acid, and/or dehydration, e.g. evaporation. Specification 537,794 is referred to.
